(October 25, 2021) When enrollment reopens for Washington’s Guaranteed Education Tuition (GET) program on November 1, Washington families will have an unprecedented opportunity to literally prepay for tomorrow’s tuition at today’s price. For the first time in its 23-year history, GET will offer a unit purchase price that does not include a premium over current in-state tuition rates.
(October 21, 2021) It’s the time of year when things may jump out at you, catch you off guard and scare you! Saving for your child’s education doesn’t have to be one of them.
(October 14, 2021) Fall is the time when most students are starting a new school year. Yet, even with that annual reminder that their kids are creeping closer and closer to a future after high school, most parents continue to put off planning for the looming expense.
(September 27, 2021) Traditionally the holiday season is the period from Thanksgiving through the New Year. But unofficially, I believe it starts in October. That’s when the air is cool, sweaters are back on, and pumpkin spice, apple cider and mocha lattes are at the top of my must have beverage list. But no matter when it officially starts, it’s my favorite season of the year.
(September 14,2021) When I was young, back to school time meant Mom created checklists. Keeping track of things like supplies, clothes, lunches, after school care, field trips, sports schedules and equipment was nearly a full-time job with three boys. Creating a plan and doing our best were themes my family used in everything we did, especially planning for college.
(August 12, 2021) When I started working for the GET Program in 2005, I had a 3-year-old and 1-year-old. At the time I had never heard of a 529 Plan, but I quickly learned the importance of preparing and saving early for my children’s college education.
My husband and I were spending what was equivalent to a mortgage payment to pay for childcare and didn’t have a lot of extra money. It wasn’t until they were both in grade school, and we no longer had the expense of childcare, that we setup GET accounts for each of them.
(July 26, 2021) - There is nothing like experiencing your baby’s firsts! I will never forget the turquoise dress my daughter wore when she took her first steps, or the little hoodie my son had on when he learned to walk. Looking back brings a smile to my face and tears to my eyes.
(July 13, 2021) - In 2018 my first child graduated from high school and I officially became a college parent. During our search for colleges, we realized my daughter’s dream of becoming a screenwriter was not going to become reality at an in-state public university. Searching beyond state universities was not in “my” plan. We were lucky to find a fantastic out-of-state screenwriting program that was affordable after she was awarded scholarships, grants, and loans. Of course, we still had expenses to pay after scholarships and financial aid were awarded.
(June 22, 2021) - “Hey Nana, I want to be an engineer when I grow up!” said one of my grandchildren. “I am going to college…somewhere!”
Each of them are unique and passionate about learning. Crafts, Lego building, podcasts, coding (yes, already at age 8) and dress-up time fill their days. They venture outside any chance they get. They find the beauty in nature and have natural curiosities about most everything.
My husband and I have five grandchildren and enjoy our time with our “little ones.”
